Hannah Grace Smith of “Impish” is a 23-year-old designer from out in the woods of Upton, Massachusetts. Having lived most her childhood in an isolated place full of nature, Hannah spent most of her time making up fantasy stories about monsters and fairies, writing stories and drawing comics about her playtime adventures. This imaginative story-telling is something she tries to accomplish in all of her mediums, especially in her apparel designs. In 2010, Hannah won a gold key in the Boston Scholastic Art Awards for an illustration project, which pushed her further into the world of fine arts and illustration. She began her education career at Massachusetts College of Art, finishing her foundations year there before transferring to Mount Ida College.

Hannah’s designs push boundaries, blurring the lines between costume and fashion. She approaches the design process with an artistic eye, using the runway to tell a narrative similar to the stories she made up as a child. She has explored many mediums and materials in her journey at Mount Ida. One memorable piece being a dress made out of toys and stuffed animals that was awarded “Most Creative Use of Materials” in the Fashion Futures 2015 show. Overall, her style is adventurous, youthful, humorous, and sometimes a little twisted. She hopes to combine her fine arts background with her design background in the future, using both her illustration and design skills to create something original.
